CHARACTER CLASSES

EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES.

Each character in the Outbound Hope world is different, but player experience also varies wildly based on the class of character being played. What can you expect from each? Explore the differences below:

Civilian Classes

Government

12 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

-$100 Self-Costuming Discount

Players are expected to provide their own, appropriate costume for the event.

Government characters are the members of the civilian leadership selected to guide the Outbound Colonists on their journey to their new home. Spearheading the efforts of the Department of Colonial Affairs, the civilian government is tasked with ensuring the welfare of the civilian fleet — even when their efforts must conflict with the leadership of the USSC.

Civilian leaders will have to manage fleet resources, ensuring the well-being of citizens and enabling the ability to craft new goods and resources the fleet may require. We’re also finally implementing the new morale system, which will carefully monitor public opinions throughout the fleet as they relate to the USSC, the civilian government and other essential factions. Government actions – and those of the civilian press – can profoundly impact these sympathies, which could have dramatic effects on the overall story throughout the weekend!

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Governor, Minister of Colonial Security, Attorney General, Chief of Staff, Communications Director, Minister of Health, Education and Welfare, etc.

Press

6 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

-$100 Self-Costuming Discount

Players are expected to provide their own, appropriate costume for the event.

-$100 Press Production Discount

Players are asked to produce textual and video materials meant to inform the rest of the player population of events going on while heavily influencing the overall game.

For the fleet, information is a vital commodity. As thousands of civilians demand accountability from their civilian and military leaders, the free press must fulfill its role. Get the essential scoop from other characters and NPCs and broadcast vital information to the masses via a new media system and sway public opinion throughout the fleet.

Create videos, audio broadcasts, or text-based stories and broadcast them on the infoweb, earning points that could ultimately earn your character (and you) the title of “most trusted journalist in the fleet). Be careful, though – your work will have a massive effect on the overall morale of the fleet and could earn you the support – or anger! – of civilian and military leaders!

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Civilian Journalist, etc.

Military Classes (Flame of Liberty)

Crew

19 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Crew characters are those that bring the Flame of Liberty into the fight and across the void. Whether at the helm, manning gun turrets, or checking scanners, the crew are essential to maintaining the function of the fleet’s military vessels under the guidance of command. Some crew persons serve in positions of departmental or ship command, bravely leading the Flame into parts unknown.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Captain, XO, Helm, Navigator, Gunnery Specialist, SAI Integration Specialist, Ordinance Specialist, Cadet, etc.

Intelligence

10 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

NEW CLASS!

NEW FOR 2027! Intelligence characters are those who seek the truth and ensure that critical information reaches where it needs to go… and doesn’t reach those who aren’t in the need-to-know. Discretion is key whether investigating threats, gathering information, monitoring communications, analyzing reports or piecing together clues. Their work may take them into the field, behind a communications console, or into the darkest corners of the information network. Knowledge can mean the difference between survival and catastrophe… and the Intelligence department ensures that the Flame of Liberty is never fighting blind.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Internal Communications Specialist, External Communications Specialist, Crytographer, Master-at-Arms, Chief Intelligence Officer, Chief Security Officer, etc.

Drone Pilots

6 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Drone Pilot characters manage the fleet’s unmanned drones in offensive, defensive, and scientific capacities. With the era of manned fighters having long since passed, drone pilots maneuver smaller craft to the places they’re needed most – all from a safe distance aboard the Flame of Liberty.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Drone Pilot, etc.

Engineering

8 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Engineer characters are essential for maintaining the proper function of the Flame of Liberty. Whether monitoring levels of power and coolant or restoring broken components, the Flame would quickly fall into disrepair without them. Master hands-on puzzles and moderate crucial ship systems – the rest of the crew depends on you!

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Chief Engineer, Quartermaster, Engineering Specialist, Engineer, etc.

Marines

10 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Marine characters help to provide an essential line of defense in the security of the Outbound Fleet. While many problems can be handled peacefully, the strong arm of the USOM is often required to subdue dangerous hostiles. As problems arise within the fleet, Marines may be sent to rescue, secure, or reassert control. The most physically-demanding role within the fleet, marines must be able to move through enemy ships or across dangerous planetscapes while handling heavy weapons and armor.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Marine Commander, Marine, Marine Medic, etc.

Medical

9 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Medical characters are essential to maintaining the health and well-being of the Outbound Fleet. As injuries and illnesses arise, medical personnel must work to restore those in their care. Technology is often the ally of good medicine, and the Flame of Liberty has state-of-the-art equipment that can even bring individuals back from the brink of death.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Chief Medical Officer, Corpsman, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Cybernetics Technician, etc.

Military Classes (Sally Ride)

Gunship Crew

6 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Gunship crew characters staff the Sally Ride, an Osprey-Class gunship that flies alongside the Flame of Liberty as it crosses into a new solar system and the adventures beyond. As a crew of six individuals, each will serve a crucial role in operating the ship, acting as a tight-knit crew. Taking orders from the admiral, the Sally Ride is able to fly out on independent adventures or dock with the Flame of Liberty.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Sally Ride Commander, Sally Ride Helm, Sally Ride Communications, Sally Ride Engineer, Sally Ride Operations, Sally Ride Weapons Specialist, etc.

Martian Classes

Martian Scientists

8 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

Science characters assist the Outbound Fleet in exploring the unknown as they drift among the untamed reaches of space. Though working alongside the USSC and the Department of Colonial Affairs, the science team is actually the result of a makeshift alliance between the USSC and the Martian Collective.

POSSIBLE ROLES:
Scientist, etc.

Miscellaneous Classes

Wild Card

6 POSITIONS
AVAILABLE PER WEEK

-$200 Wild Card Discount

Wild Card players can be placed in any of the previous player classes — or as a unique character altogether — depending on the needs of the overall event.

Wild Card characters are a great choice for players with few specifications on the type of character they would like to be. While staff may use wild card characters to fill voids in unfilled character categories, they may also find themselves as unique and interesting characters that add intrigue and flavor to the other game participants. Please note that this character option is not for NPC’s – these will continue to be unique and fleshed out characters for players to enjoy for the duration of the event.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON COSTUMING: Due to the varied possibilities attached to this role, players will be provided with appropriate costuming if given a civilian role (though the player may choose to incorporate a costume of their own if they choose to do so).

POSSIBLE ROLES:
UNKNOWN

CANCELLATION and REFUND POLICY

Prior to December 1, 2026, cancel at any point — no questions asked — and we’ll refund everything you have paid but your $100 non-refundable deposit. Starting December 1, 2026, the following conditions apply:

UNTIL FEBRUARY 28, 2027

From December 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027, cancel and be refunded what you have paid above your non-refundable deposit, to a maximum of 50% of your payments due at the time of cancellation.

However, should we fill your roster spot, we will refund all but your non-refundable deposit.*

UNTIL MARCH 1, 2027

After March 1, 2027, we are unable to refund any fees paid in the event of a cancellation.

However, should we fill your roster spot, we will refund all but your non-refundable deposit.*

We get it: Life happens.
If you’re within one of the restricted refund windows,
you can request a waiver from event staff.

* Why does Outbound keep some or all of my paid funds? Unfortunately, an event like Outbound Hope is expensive to produce, and many of the expenses occur long before the event itself. We need to be sure our bills are paid if future events like Outbound are to continue! That said, if we are able to fill your spot after you cancel (no guarantee we will be able to do so), you’re largely off the hook.
