CHARACTER CLASSES
EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES.
Each character in the Outbound Hope world is different, but player experience also varies wildly based on the class of character being played. What can you expect from each? Explore the differences below:
22 PLAYERS PER WEEK
[MILITARY] Crew
Crew characters are those that bring the Flame of Liberty across the void and into the fight. Whether at the helm, monitoring comms, manning gun turrets or checking scanners, the crew are essential to maintaining the function of the fleet’s military vessels under the guidance of command. Some crew persons serve in positions of command, bravely leading the Flame into parts unknown.
NEW TO 2026: “Crew” now includes all character types previously assigned to the “crew,” “gunners,” “comms,” and much of “command” categories. Player preferences — given to staff during the upcoming player survey — will help our writing team place you into a specific role that best suits your play style and interests.

With the era of manned fighters having long since passed, these fighter jockeys work in pairs to maneuver smaller craft to the places they’re needed most – all from a safe distance aboard the Flame of Liberty.
NEW TO 2026: Working in paired teams, players will utilize our starship software to pilot two-person drones through the unknown. A designated “drone suite” will be found within the Flame of Liberty, where teams will work together when the need arises.

[MILITARY] Marines
Marine characters help to provide an essential line of defense in the security of the Outbound Fleet. While many problems can be handled peacefully, the strong arm of the USOM is often required to subdue dangerous hostiles. As problems arise within the fleet, Marines may be sent to rescue, secure, or reassert control. The most physically-demanding role within the fleet, marines must be able to move through enemy ships or across dangerous planetscapes while handling heavy weapons and armor.
NEW TO 2026: More weapons and more places to explore and defend! Key portions of the USS Edson have been set aside as modular space for all-new ship boardings and missions with more surprises to be seen!

Technology is often the ally of good medicine, and the Flame of Liberty has state-of-the-art equipment that can even bring individuals back from the brink of death.
NEW TO 2026: A significantly-expanded medical suite gives medical players far more room to care for their patients and get the job done. New rules introduce new treatments and medications with short- and long-term effects for recipients! And don’t forget the new-and-improved BioBed!

[MILITARY/SUBSHIP] Gunship Crew
Gunship crew characters staff the Sally Ride, an Osprey-Class gunship that flies alongside the Flame of Liberty as it crosses into a new solar system and the adventures beyond. As a crew of six individuals, each will serve a crucial role in operating the ship, acting as a tight-knit crew. The Sally Ride is able to fly out on independent adventures or dock with the Flame of Liberty.
NEW TO 2026: Subships finally take flight in 2026! These smaller vessels (3-6 crew members) serve as independent vessels within the fleet able to move and operate independently of the Flame of Liberty. Subship sets exist within previously-unused space aboard the USS Edson, allowing characters to ‘dock’ and ‘detach’ at will — so you’ll never miss any of the action! Preference will be given to groups of players that wish to register as an entire crew, with open registration occurring thereafter if the crews do not fill.
Groups of 6 players will be able to apply to be the GUNSHIP CREW on July 2. If more than one group applies per week, the winning group will be selected by lottery and contacted on July 3. Members of the groups that are not chosen will, of course, be welcome to register for alternative roles on July 4/July 11.

Stationed aboard the MCRF Allan Sandage, the science team will be able to explore the mysteries of the universe… or participate in solving the problems within the fleet itself.
NEW TO 2026: No more science pit! Instead, our science team will now be stationed aboard the Allan Sandage, giving them far greater flexibility to complete missions, research, and exploration. Wander the star system on your own or dock with the Flame and see what’s new!

Able to fly independently or dock with the Flame of Liberty, the crew of the Sandage will need to ensure the safety of its passengers as it explores the mysteries beyond the Bifrost Gate.

[CIVILIAN] Press
For the fleet, information is a vital commodity. As thousands of civilians demand accountability from their civilian and military leaders, the free press must fulfill its role. Get the essential scoop from other characters and NPCs and broadcast vital information to the masses via a new media system and sway public opinion throughout the fleet.
NEW TO 2026: Introducing a new, exciting mini-game exclusively for press players! Create videos, audio broadcasts, or text-based stories and broadcast them on the infoweb, earning points that could ultimately earn your character (and you) the title of “most trusted journalist in the fleet”). Be careful, though – your work will have a massive effect on the overall morale of the fleet and could earn you the support – or anger! – of civilian and military leaders!

[CIVILIAN] Government
Government characters are the members of the civilian leadership selected to guide the Outbound Colonists on their journey to their new home. Spearheading the efforts of the Department of Colonial Affairs, the civilian government is tasked with ensuring the welfare of the civilian fleet — even if their efforts conflict with the leadership of the USSC.
NEW TO 2026: The civilian government will be busier than ever this year with two major changes to the rules! First, civilian leaders will have to manage fleet resources, ensuring the well-being of citizens and enabling the ability to craft new goods and materials the fleet may require. Secondly, we’ll be adopting a new morale system, which will carefully monitor public opinions throughout the fleet as they relate to the USSC, the civilian government and the ACA. Government actions – and those of the civilian press – can profoundly impact these sympathies, which could have dramatic effects on the overall story throughout the weekend!

[CIVILIAN/SUBSHIP] Civilian Industrial Crew
As the industrial ship’s crew, players will serve as the civilian staff of VL-WSS-041, a sophisticated Vulcan-Class industrial platform assigned to the Outbound Fleet. Meant to process resources and print them into vital materials and components, the industrial platform is an essential vessel in the Outbound fleet and a key component in providing the Flame and her sister ships with the items they need to continue flying.
NEW TO 2026: Subships finally take flight in 2026! These smaller vessels (3-6 crew members) serve as independent vessels within the fleet able to move and operate independently of the Flame of Liberty. The crew of the civilian industrial ship will play a major role in the new resource economy, with their vessel able to refine raw materials and craft critical resources essential to the Flame of Liberty and the rest of the fleet!
Groups of 6 players will be able to apply to be the CIVILIAN INDUSTRIAL CREW on July 2. If more than one group applies per week, the winning group will be selected by lottery and contacted on July 3. [???] WILD CARD
Wild Card characters are a great choice for players with few specifications on the type of character they would like to be. While staff may use wild card characters to fill voids in unfilled character categories, they may also find themselves as unique and interesting characters that add intrigue and flavor to the other game participants. Please note that this character option is not for NPC’s – these will continue to be unique and fleshed out characters for players to enjoy for the duration of the event.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON COSTUMING: Due to the varied possibilities attached to this role, players will be provided with appropriate costuming if given a civilian role (though the player may choose to incorporate a costume of their own with staff approval).

* Why does Outbound keep some or all of my paid funds? Unfortunately, an event like Outbound Hope is expensive to produce, and many of the expenses occur long before the event itself. We need to be sure our bills are paid if future events like Outbound are to continue! That said, if we are able to fill your spot after you cancel (no guarantee we will be able to do so), you’re largely off the hook.
